Short Story - A Staircase To Home

The door of the front passenger seat of a white Mercedes opened. Beautiful Samyra stepped her foot out of the car, showing off her pink beaded sandals that went well with her heavily decorated pink sari. Her long red choora, red sindhoor, tiny round pink bindi and pink nail polish added the glamour to her look.

She looked around the place where she grew up, recollecting the memories of her childhood. Looking at the sky, she smiled, then looked at the ground, adjusted the falls of her sari and started walking towards the gate of the condo where her parents lived. It had been one year to her marriage and it was the second time that she was visiting her parents, who lived only thirty minutes away from her home.

She started opening the metal gate of the condo and remembered her situation when she visited the place for the first time post marriage, which was after the 2 months of her marriage.

Due to some unfortunate incidents and misunderstandings in her marriage, her new family didn't allow her to visit her parents. She could not understand whether she was married or was imprisoned for some big crime. How did new relations changed her old relations, she always questioned god.

Everyday she hoped for the situations to change and to meet and hug her parents. She got tired, sad and hopeless. Then one day, after 2 months of her marriage she decided to bunk her office and visit her parents. She left home at the normal office hours, took a taxi from the stand and reached the condo where her parents lived. She stepped out of the taxi and saw her car, a Nano, parked in parking as always. She used to drive this car everyday before marriage. She went straight to the car, touched her with her left hand in which she wore her engagement ring - a precious solitaire. A tear came out of her eyes.

She quickly wiped her tears and started walking towards the apartment of her parents which was on the third floor of the condo. As she walked, more and more tears started to come out of her eyes. She started to become restless to meet her parents and started running towards their home.

Running made her tired, but, she didn't slow down. She started to climb the ladder. She was quick to reach the first floor. All the memories of her life spent here started to cross her mind. Her tears turned into cry. She put her hands on her face to cover her cry. She continued climbing the stairs. By the time she reached the second floor, she busted and started crying loud.

Realizing her surroundings, she controlled herself. But the next few steps towards her parent's home became so difficult for her to climb. Thinking about her old beautiful days, crying and keeping her head down, she started to climb the remaining stairs. When she took her last step, she felt energy-less.

Gaining some courage and controlling herself, she stepped forward, and rang the doorbell of the house that used to be hers 2 months ago.

Her father opened the door. He got scared seeing her daughter in jeans and shirt standing on the door with her face red and swollen, eye liner and lipstick all destroyed with tears.

Reading his face Samyra said "I am fine. Everything is fine. I just wanted to see how you all are".

She hugged him immediately and silently. But, busted into tears within seconds. Her father hugged her back and started crying himself. Her mother came running on hearing the cries. But Samyra didn't leave hugging her father. She hugged him until she was fine and satisfied. She then looked at his face and smiled. She felt better.

She then went on to hugging her mother and brother.

Her father didn't go to office that day. Her brother didn't go to college that day. Her mother made her favorite dishes for her. They spent a happy day together laughing, giggling and gossiping.

Samyra was happy and content by the end of the day. But, in the evening, it was time for her to leave them and go back to her home.

"Thanks for visiting us Samyra" said her mom "we really wanted to see you. It was a beautiful day with you, just like old times"

Samyra smiled back to her.

"But" said her mom and paused. Then started speaking again "Time never remains same and neither will your tough time be like this forever. It is always easy and lucrative to take wrong path. But these paths can never bring you happiness."

"What do you mean mom" asked Samyra

"Don't take me wrong. Thanks for coming. I am the happiest today. But never come like this again. You are not a thief. Have faith in god. You are always welcome in this home, it's yours. But next time, come with your husband and with the permission of your new family. Come with pride next time. You are a girl of great character. I am sure you will turn around things with you love and good behaviour"

Remembering her first visit, standing on the gate of the condo, Samyra smiled proudly. She looked back at her white Mercedes. The door of the driving seat opened, from there came out a gentleman in pink shirt and blue jeans.

He started walking towards her. Approaching her and hugging her he said "What are you thinking my sweetheart? Hurry up. My sweet mother in law is waiting for me. Let's Go!"
