Short Story - The First Crush

Sitting on his chair, Dave, a 33-year-old man, opened the Facebook app on his iPhone. He clicked the home tab to see the latest stories on his Facebook wall. Scrolling down the wall, his thumb suddenly stopped. Dave felt like seeing an update above, from someone he knew, but who wasn't in his friend list.

He immediately scrolled back up to the story. It was a picture post from a beautiful woman announcing the birth of her second baby. The post was visible to him because their common friend was tagged in the post. Dave kept looking at the picture for few seconds, and then, smiled.

He knew that woman. He knew her since the time when she was a young girl. She was from his school: same batch, but different section. She was his first crush.

With this picture, so many beautiful memories crossed his mind. He remembered, how excited he used to get when the girl used to come to his section to meet her best friend and how he never used to miss any opportunity of visiting her class just to have one glance of her.

He felt tickles thinking about how all his friends, who knew about his feelings for her, used to tease him with her name and how they used to start shouting his name loudly around her. He smiled thinking how he never used to miss any of the activities the girl used to participate in.

He was in love with her innocent face, beautiful big eyes, her intelligence, and her kind nature. All the romantic songs used to remind him of her. Dave remembered how he used to listen and sing along 'I can be your hero' and 'Every night in my dreams' songs multiple times a day for her.

In those days Dave always used to wonder if the girl had any clue about his feelings. He believed that the girl knew about his feelings already, but never pretended.

He laughed at how he became friends with the best friend of the girl. He even sent his love proposal for her through her best friend. Apparently, the proposal backfired. The girl, who occasionally used to say Hello to him, started giving him an angry look every time.

His one-sided love story, which was the talk of the school in those times, never reached anywhere. And after the school got over, he couldn't stay in touch with the girl. He never heard of her from anyone. With time, he almost forgot about her.

Today, her picture on Facebook brought back all those golden memories. Rejection from the girl during the school days was painful for him to accept and live with. But, thinking about those days today, after almost 15 years, felt sweet.

He became curious to know more about her. His mind bombarded him with many questions like where she was. Whom was she married to? What was she doing? His heart took control over his brain and he started using all the tools available on the internet to get more information about her, starting from the link to her Facebook profile. Her last name had changed.

He couldn't get much from her Facebook profile because nothing was shared publicly. He checked LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Google and what not.

She was doing well professionally and her Facebook cover picture and display picture showed she was happy personally too.  Somewhere deep within he was jealous. He wondered how his life had been, had she accepted her proposal. Flood of various scenarios started crossing his mind.

"Hmmm. Had she accepted my proposal, and become my girlfriend, how different had my life been? " he said to himself. His face lightened up with a smile. He straightened his legs on the table in front of him to relax and enjoy his delightful thoughts.

The door of his study room opened. His wife came running towards him with their one-year-old baby in her hands.

"Honey, can you please hold her, I need to take shower. I will be back in few minutes" giving the baby to him she rushed towards the bathroom.

Dave looked at his lovely grey-eyed and chubby cheeked daughter who was throwing a radiant smile at him with her four tiny teeth. He started to tickle her. She laughed aloud. He swung her up in the air and she laughed louder. He was having a wonderful time with her daughter.

His wife came after twenty minutes. "Hope she didn't trouble you much," she said, picked up the baby and started walking towards the door.

Dave immediately stood up and ran towards his wife and baby.

"I am happy with whatever happened to me in life. I am glad that I met you in college. And I am thankful that we decided to marry each other. My life couldn't have been this good without you." Dave said to his beautiful wife.

Giving his wife and daughter a nice family hug, he said: "I love you both so much."
